Proper Rug Cleaning Technique

by Harold C. Cain.

One of the best accessories a person can add to their house or living area is a rug. A rug can instantly dress up and decorate any room. But owning a rug merits its own set of responsibilities such as rug cleaning. Without proper rug maintenance a rug can be permanently stained and/or irreparably damaged. To prevent such extreme cases it is best to regularly call professional rug cleaners. But if you cant afford such a service then it is best to clean your own rug. It may seem like a daunting task but following these steps youll have a clean rug in no time.

One of the best preventive measures a person can take to keep their rug clean is to not wear shoes while walking on it. In many cultures it is a common practice for people to remove their shoes before entering or walking on to a room with a rug. If you adopt this mannerism you will not only keep your rug cleaner for longer periods of time but your rug will sustain less damage. Certain shoes like heels, boots, and cleats can damage a rug a great deal. While those shoes can damage a rug anyone can accidentally drag in dirt from outside if they do not remove their shoes before entering.

To test the cleanliness of your rug you have a few different options. You can first pick up one of the corners of your rug. Then kick the back of the corner, if a cloud of smoke erupts from the rug then it is time for a cleaning. You can also rub your hand across a section of the rug. If your hands are dirty after you rubbed your rug then it is also time for a cleaning.

To begin the cleaning process first roll up your rug and remove it from the room. Bring it to a well ventilated area or outside. To remove any excess dirt and dust left on the floor sweep and mop it up. Now once you cleaned the floor you can move onto the rug itself. First you must carefully vacuum each side. After the vacuuming you must then clean your rug with water and rug shampoo. Mild soap will also work in place of rug shampoo if you dont happen to have any. Before washing the rug test a tiny area of rug to see if your soap is going to cause the colors to run. If the color of your test area begins to run purchase a rug shampoo or switch to a different brand of soap. Then hang up your rub on a close line. Scrub the rug with a long bristled comb or brush, following the weave of the rug. If you dont scrub with the weave you run the risk of unraveling your rug. After a good scrub down you can begin to rinse it out. You can spray your rug with a hose or continually douse it with buckets of water. After its rinsed out remove all the excess water and lay the rug flat on the ground so it can dry. It may take a couple of hours or even over night, but you must be patient. Once it is dry vacuum it again to prevent any stiffness.

With proper care you can make your rug last a long time. It will be looking its best and will surely impress everyone. But if you feel you dont have the time or the means to clean your own rug it is best to call in the professionals.
